Themed with urban sustainable development, this course discusses the relationship between city and the environment, reciprocity of the environmental elements, city’s reliance and influence on natural resources, perturbations to different ecological systems caused by different urban development mode, and the effect of infrastructure on the urban function and regional ecological system bearing capacity expansion, by clue of urban development process in terms of the analysis of values, urban material flow, and energy flow. This course is the first basic specialized course for undergraduate majored in environmental engineering and water supply and waste water engineering. With the background knowledge of Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, this course aims to lay a good foundation for the following specialized courses. This course is composed of classroom teaching, experiments, and monitoring plan design & discussion. The classroom lectures mainly introduces monitoring of water, air, soil, and noise, quality control of environmental monitoring, and new environmental monitoring technologies. Make students understand the continent and properties of natural water, waste water, air, emissions and soil, be familiar with the content and establishment principles of water & air quality standards, understand the origin of pollutions and the properties and analytical and measurement methods of the major pollutant, grasp the major monitoring methods and the environmental meaning of the indexes in water, air, soil and noise monitoring, and understand the application of these data in pollution control engineering. Select major water quality indexes like BOD, COD and TOC, and air and soil quality indexes like nitrogen oxide, and launch monitoring experiments on campus, cultivating practical operation capacity of the students. Brief introduction:
This course mainly introduces the basic theory and property, calculation methods of crafts, application field, major constituent and operation features of the major physical chemistry and biological treatment units in water and waste water treatment, the typical water supply and waste water treatment craft and the latest research progress at home and abroad. The course is divided into two parts. The first part is the principle and craft of physical chemistry treatment of water and waste water. It mainly introduces the physical chemistry treatment units including coagulation, precipitation & clarification, floatation, filtration, disinfection, oxidation & reduction, membrane separation, and soften & demineralization; the second part is about the principles and craft of biological treatment of waste water, mainly introduces aerobic and anaerobic biological treatment craft of waste water, biological nutrient and phosphorus removal craft, natural treatment craft of waste water, and the treatment & management of sludge. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a featured course in the field of environmental science and engineering. EIA is a very important procedure in the environmental management of China. It has a series of related laws, regulations and guidelines. The methods of EIA will be a basic skill for environmentalists in the future. The government has introduced examination system for the working license of EIA. Following the related requirement of the examination system, this course teaches the students to comprehensively master the basic theory, method, procedure, and principle of EIA. Brief introduction:
This course requires students to independently complete a municipal sewage or industrial wastewater treatment plant (station) design on the basis of theories learned in water treatment engineering according to the given design materials with respect to the visit to wastewater treatment plant. The design should include: define process, and calculate selection and size of all treatment structures; draw the floor chart and elevation layout of the sewage treatment plant; draw the early expansion graph of a processing structures and the construction chart of a key processing structure; finish the document of design calculations and design specifications. After this design, students to supposed to have a further understanding of the theory knowledge, be familiar with procedures and methods for water treatment engineering design, and the ability of using design references and design specifications, and master the requirements of different levels of process design drawing, properly dimension, the writing skills of project design documents, and have concepts of engineering and economics.

Every student should arrange about one week to investigate the typical environmental issue and environmental protection situations about their hometown during the vacation. Students who will stay in Beijing can investigate with students in Beijing.
2 special lectures
Combining hot environmental protection issues at home and abroad, and inviting governors, enterprisers, professors in or out of universities, give lectures on environmental management, environmental industry, environmental research development and introduction to the department of environmental science and technology.
2 visits and discussions
Arrange students to visit typical pollution monitoring and treatment facilities and companies around Beijing, to increase students’ understanding of pollutant control work.
4 education of lab safety
