Master Program

The master program in Environmental Engineering and Management covers the areas of environmental engineering and science, and environmental management and planning. Aiming at the development of technical and sustainable solutions that minimize the impact of society on the environment in a rapid-growing country, the master degree in  DESE provides a comprehensive professional education and research in water/wastewater treatment, air pollution control, solid waste management, environmental chemistry, environmental microbiology etc. A highly flexible study scheme is an important distinguishing feature of this program which allow for development of either intensive or broadened abilities of the participants.

The master program is aimed to educate students with solid theoretical and systematic professional knowledge and the ability for environmental pollution control. The program is designed to train students to be at the forefront of environmental engineering and management with a combination of coursework and research components. The master program is aimed to educate students with solid theoretical and systematic professional knowledge and the ability for environmental pollution control. Admissions
The master program is designed for applicants from all over the world with a wide variety of interests and backgrounds including Environmental Science and Engineering, Urban Planning, Environmental Economics or Management, Chemical Engineering or Chemistry, and other natural and agricultural sciences.
The program is also suitable for people working in other areas who intend to pursue a career in environmental engineering and management, or simply want to increase their understanding of the field. Students should have a B.S. or equivalent degree. Knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry is a prerequisite. Computer literacy is a valuable asset. Good conversational, reading and writing capabilities in the English language are essential in order to successfully complete the study. Meeting these requirements does not, however, guarantee admission, and students must be judged academically prepared by the program faculty members.

Course Structure
Graduate courses are scheduled to allow either intensive study in a single area or interrelated study areas. Comprehensive introductory courses are given to provide a common basis of understanding among those having different backgrounds.
Students will get a deep understanding of environmental engineering and management in general as well as in China through coursework studying.  They also have the opportunity to work closely with faculty members in the DESE on a wide variety of exciting research and development projects. The normal study period for the M.S. program is 2 years.

Internship
In addition to coursework, completion of the master program requires an internship/field survey. During the survey, the student will design and conduct scientific survey on China-specific environmental issues with the help of supervisors. A diverse number of internship opportunities are available, for instance in a water or wastewater treatment plant, at a sanitary landfill site, in a national or international company working with environmental issues, in an environmental protection bureau, or other national or international organizations. During the survey, students will have an exposure to methods and techniques used by natural and social scientists to identify, analyze and interpret environmental problems. The survey will be in Beijing or in other parts of China, and usually carried out in the summer after the first academic year.

 Dissertation
Students enrolling in this master program need to complete research work for thesis, which is helpful for graduates to gain a deep insight of environmental engineering and management. The thesis will be allotted by the faculty member with an interest in the particular topic or issue about which they will conduct their own research. A written thesis research proposal and a formal presentation are required in the second term. And a final oral defense are required.
