On October 15th, a virtual celebration was held to celebrate the 25th anniversary since the first university-level cooperation agreement between Tsinghua University and the University of Melbourne was signed. During the celebration, university-level cooperation agreements between the two universities were renewed.
Chen Xu, Chairperson of Tsinghua University Council, attended the celebration and delivered welcome remarks.
In her remarks, Chen Xu said that Tsinghua and the University of Melbourne have enjoyed a long-standing partnership characterized by a high level of mobility and exchange, and impactful research outcomes across disciplines. What the two universities have achieved contributes to people-to-people understanding and the relations between the two nations: by enhancing academic and cultural ties, and instilling young talent with global competencies.
“This September marked the 25th anniversary since the first university-level cooperation agreement between Tsinghua and the University of Melbourne was signed. I hope our two universities, jointly and together, will make greater contributions to global society,” Chen said.
University of Melbourne Vice Chancellor Professor Duncan Maskell said the partnership between Tsinghua University and the University of Melbourne is important. “This is a special milestone in the relationship between the University of Melbourne and Tsinghua University. The partnership is testament to the hard work of staff, students, collaborators, and alumni of both universities, and it continues to evolve. I look forward to the next 25 years of cooperation between Tsinghua University and the University of Melbourne.”
Following the remarks, a virtual signing ceremony to renew the agreement between the two universities was held. With the renewal of the agreements, the two universities will continue to further their cooperation and promote student exchanges.
In the panel discussion, seven professors of varied disciplines from Tsinghua and the University of Melbourne reflected on the highlights and collaborative achievements in the Tsinghua-Melbourne partnership, and discussed the emerging opportunities for further collaboration.
“Today’s event demonstrates the partnership’s long-term commitment to meaningful engagement and in-depth international education,” said Yang Bin, Vice President and Provost of Tsinghua University.
“Neither distance nor the pandemic can stop our aspirations for further communication and cooperation. We are looking forward to the next phase of engagement, building on this solid foundation for an even more beneficial, more multi-disciplinary, and more impactful partnership,” Yang added.
Yang Bin, Vice President and Provost of Tsinghua University, together with Michael Wesley, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, moderated the celebration event.
Li Jinliang, Dean for International Affairs, Peng Kaiping, Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Wu Li, Associate Dean of the School of Medicine, and Wang Jinghui, Professor of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures from Tsinghua University, together with Sarah Biddulph, Assistant Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Jane Gunn, Deputy Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, Lindsay Oades, Director of the Centre for Positive Psychology, Mark Wang, Director of the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies, and Sun Sheng Han, Melbourne School of Design from the University of Melbourne, participated in this celebration.
More than 120 students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the two universities attended this celebration online.
