The School of Environment launched the International Student Ambassador Program in 2016. Ambassadors are assigned a group of incoming students, to whom they provide guidance on a range of matters relating to studying and living in China.

Annika

Hello, I am Annika from Germany and I am very excited to meet you this fall! I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree here at Tsinghua University’s School of Environment, in the Division of Environmental Biology. Besides providing great resources and learning opportunities, Tsinghua also offers a beautiful campus to enjoy the scenery or relax in one of the many cafés.

Before coming to Tsinghua, I studied and researched at two more of Beijing’s universities (Beijing Institute of Technology and Beijing University of Science and Technology), and lived in Shenzhen (southern China) for a year.  Thus, I’ll be happy to share my experiences and gain many more within the next year!

Yi Peng

Hi everybody, my name is Yipeng Wu. I am a Chinese student from Shandong province. My supervisor is Prof. Shuming Liu, in the Division of Drinking Water Safety. It is my honor to be an ambassador of the School of Environment for new international students.

I came to Tsinghua for my master’s degree in 2014. I am now a PhD student because I am so interested in my research area and I love everything in Tsinghua. To ensure safer water supply, my research focuses on detecting events (e.g., pipe bursts) in the drinking water distribution system using data mining techniques. My time at Tsinghua has helped me realise the beauty of data and significance of scientific research. In addition to the strong academic atmosphere, Tsinghua has beautiful sceneries, lovely people, and tasty food. All these will help keep you happy!

Jae Jun

I am Jae Jun Kim, from South Korea. My master’s research focuses on wastewater treatment technology. One of my primary purposes for working on this research is that this field of study can help many people and it is meaningful!

I am confident that the Ambassador program will be very helpful to new students because I already experienced this program when I was a new student last year. It is an honor to be an ambassador of School of Environment and welcome to Tsinghua University. I hope you will have a great time at here!

Dan

Hi there! I am Yizhe Zhang (Dan) and I am currently a second-year graduate. I am focusing on emerging and persistent organic pollutants. My supervisor is Prof. Bin Wang of the Division of Environmental Chemistry. 

Tsinghua is a wonderland. It can offer you everything that you have ever imagined about a university and double it: 4 libraries, 4 track fields, and 19 restaurants and canteens. You can take any classes you want, meet the world leaders and most importantly eat differently every day for a year! Trust me, every day here is new!

Fortunately, my thirst for knowledge did not come to an end when I did my bachelor degree in Environmental Sciences and master degree in Environmental Policy & Management. I was passionate about nature and science. This passion helped me gain profound knowledge in these areas and I was admitted to the university of my dreams..My name is Hooriya Fakhar and today I am a PhD student in the School of Environment. It’s an honor to be a student ambassador and to help all the students who are like me and are eager to learn more about China and its food, culture and language. It's my pleasant duty to bid you all a genial welcome. It's time to say goodbye, but I think goodbyes are sad and I'd much rather say hello. Hello to a new adventure.

Lu Shen

Hi, my name is Lu Shen, from Jiangsu province in China. Now I am at Tsinghua University for my master’s degree.

Since high school I have been curious about where the water we are using comes from and goes to within  a city. Thus I chose water supply and drainage engineering as my major in Sichuan University. It is acknowledged that water is one of the important elements in the environment but currently issues about water, such as water pollution and shortage, are very severe. I came to Tsinghua University to continue studying water problems and do research in adsorption technology by carbon-based materials.

I look forward to working with you on environmental protection or exploring academic and social life here at Tsinghua University.

Sanjena

Hello, I am Sanjena. I am Indian and am pursuing my master's in Environmental Engineering at Tsinghua University.

Every journey we embark on, no matter how exciting it may sound, has a lot of unknowns to deal with. I came to Tsinghua in 2016 with a lot of dreams, but moving to a new country, especially for someone who hasn't really lived outside home can be quite overwhelming. That said, I think joining Tsinghua is one of the best decisions I've ever made. There is so much more to Tsinghua than its great rankings and research achievements. I've made friends from places I didn't know existed. I’ve mingled with the top brains of China. I’ve found that Tsinghua truly is a paradise – it’s even listed as one of the 14 most beautiful campuses in the world by Forbes magazine.

What makes Tsinghua all the more special is the way it treats you. This university definitely is my home away from home, and I feel super proud to be a part of it. I extend my warm welcome to you and am excited to be one of ambassadors of the School of Environment. Who better than environmentalists to create a welcoming environment for newcomers?

Ziwei Liu

My name is Liu Ziwei (Mia) and I’m from Hunan Province. I am a PhD student in my first year. My supervisor is Prof. Huang Xia, in the Division of Water Environment Protection. I got my Bachelor degree in Nankai University in Tianjin.

When I was young, I noticed that the drinking water of the small village where my grandparents live contained many white suspended solids, but my grandparents and their neighbors did not mind at all. Since then, I have tried to know more about water pollution and let more people know about its harm to health. That’s why I choose environmental engineering as my academic field. So far, I’ve just started my research on the anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) and my recent research focuses on the mechanism and control of membrane fouling.

Noshan

Hi! I am Noshan Bhattarai from Nepal.  I am carrying out research that focuses on particulate pollution under the supervision of Professor Wang Shuxiao. Before coming to Tsinghua University, I completed my undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering at Kathmandu University and then worked in the private and government sectors between 2010- 2014. I used this time to think about what I should best do with my life. It was when I was working in a cement factory as an environmental engineer that I became deeply concerned about the emission of pollutants and the nature of particulate pollution phenomena. I decided to continue my studies in the field of air pollution. In 2016, I finished a double masters’ degree program in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation for Environmental Modeling and Management from Lund University, Sweden, and the University of Twente, Netherlands.

Since joining Tsinghua in 2016, I have enjoyed the courses provided on air pollution and Chinese culture. I’ve been impressed by the availability of the well-equipped aerosol research laboratory, interactive research group and the amazing research faculty. I strongly believe that Tsinghua provides a great platform to develop our skills to contribute at the highest level to the betterment of society.

Shan Xiaoyu

I’m Xiaoyu Shan and I got my bachelor's degree in Hangzhou. This is now my first year of a PhD in the field of microbial ecology. As an undergraduate student, I became really interested in Chinese traditions and travelling to different countries. In my free time, I still love traveling (sometimes it’s even totally spontaneous!), playing classical Chinese music on the piano, purchasing lots of books from the bookstore and talking with interesting people. Now I am in charge of international student activities in the Graduate Union of the School of Environment and recently initiated the SOE Language Buddy Program here.

Student coordinators of the International Student Ambassador program are Victor Deantes (Mexico) and Kate Smith (Australia). This initiative was established as a result of consultation with the Tsinghua Postgraduate Education Advisory Committee.
