An opening ceremony was held for the new students of 2004 in the gymnasium of Tsinghua University on August 19. Tsinghua President Gu Binglin, Chen Xi, President of the University Council, He Jiankun, Vice President, and other leaders attended the ceremony.

President Gu spoke at the ceremony. He gave congratulations and extended warm welcome to the seated students. He encouraged the students to foster a lofty ideal, work hard, keep the spirit of Tsinghua, and devote themselves to the development of the country.

Professor Wang Jinsong, Vice President and Provost of Tsinghua University, hosted the ceremony.
