Cultivating the Leadership in the Management Education

(Tsinghua News Center) Cultivating the leadership in the management education was highlighted in the 2004 Tsinghua Management Education Forum, namely the Dean’s Day at Tsinghua’s School of Economic Management (TSEM).

Eight speakers from the most prestigious management institutes in the world or from the related researching institutions delivered speeches on the forum, exchanging the experience and thought on how to improve the management education, especially on fostering the leading ability of the future managers.

“A short on the leadership will have no chance to survive,” said Professor Sandra Dawson, dean of the Judge Institute of Management of Cambridge University.

She then elaborated on her perception of leadership, which in her thought was “long marches, great leaps, spontaneous strolls… sometimes in front, sometimes behind and sometimes needing help as you stumble”.

Professor Cheng Siwei, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of National People’s Congress, delivered the speech “Globalization and Management Education”, in which he stressed a long vision should be a vital element of an outstanding management leader in his understanding.

Professor Bernard Ramanastoa, from School of Management of HEC, questioned if training managers more than leaders was a strategic mistake of many business school.

He listed four key leadership talents in his speech “Managers and Leaders”, namely the cognitive talent, social and political talent, psychological talent and ethnical talent.

Professor Zhao Chunjun, dean of the TSEM, emphasized on the management education in China and its internationalization in his speech.

Kicking off in the lecture hall of Weilun building at 9 am on April 16th, the forum attracted 115 deans and deputies from 35 overseas and 38 domestic management institutes as an important session of the celebration of TSEM’s 20th anniversary.

Tsinghua’s President Gu Binglin and Vice Minister of Ministry of Education Wu Qidi gave opening remarks to the forum.
