Yale, Asian Society presidents speak at global leadership program
“Leadership in the non-profit organization” was the theme of remarks given by Yale University President Richard Levin and Asian Society President Nicholas Platt at the November meeting of the ongoing Program of Global Leadership.

In the eighth meeting of the program Nov. 13, Mr. Levin explained the operation and management of a university as a non-profit organization, and described Yale University’s development into one of the finest universities in the world. He emphasized that leaders must have a spirit of adventure, establish long-term goals and achieve these goals step by step through short-term planning.

When students asked him how leadership abilities are developed, Mr. Levin said students should attend more social activities and get in the habit of thinking in a global-oriented way.

Mr. Platt talked about the general management of the non-profit organization. He named good listening skills and having sufficient, reliable information as necessary requirements for all managers. He also said leaders should have trustworthy assistants who can call attention to gaps in the system.

In the two-hour seminar, students discussed other aspects of the operation of non-profit organizations, such as how to inspire personnel and ways to establish corporate culture.

The Program on Global Leadership is directed by Mr. John Thornton.
