In an effort to promote cross-cultural exchange and enhance friendships among Chinese and international students, the Latin American Cultural Workshop was recently held at the Dongfeng Motor Hall of the Career Development Center. The event attracted over 60 students from over ten countries around the world currently studying at more than 20 departments.
The event invited five international students from Latin American countries, including Barbados, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, and Costa Rica. They presented the languages and culture of Chile and Barbados, discussed science diplomacy in the Latin American region, and provided live instruction on the foundational steps of traditional Latin American dance - the salsa.
Expressing his thoughts on the event, Johnson Joshua Koebe, a 2023 master’s student in Industrial Engineering, said, “Cultural exposition from my Latin American fellows left differing impressions that I won’t soon forget. It made us all friends in the end. I would definitely join in another similar event again, and this time, bring a friend.” Hu Xinqi, a 2020 undergraduate student from the School of Humanities, expressed, “This event injected vitality into the campus’s multicultural atmosphere. It is an honor for me to bring together students from different countries, transcending borders to explore the diverse cultures of Latin America.” Zhang Yishan, a 2020 undergraduate student from Xingjian College, shared, “We gained a deeper understanding of the differences and connections between various Latin American countries. I’m impressed by both the academic introduction of science diplomacy and the interesting Barbadian cuisine.”
This event was organized by the Tsinghua University Student Association for Global Governance and International Organizations (THUIO). It is part of the IO Language Corner series, which invites guests with overseas work or study experience and proficiency in multiple languages to share experiences in cross-cultural communication, language learning, and communication skills. The aim is to deepen the understanding of international affairs and cross-cultural communication among students.
